In addition to custom fabrication, at Midwest Precision Inc., we provide material management for customers with specialty material needs. This custom caterpillar is used in the aerospace industry and cut from a 2.25" thick high cost titanium alloy. We understand the specific needs of the aerospace industry and maintain complete material traceability as well as provide part marking as needed. The caterpillar was cut using a waterjet cutting machine. Our waterjet cutting area has a high capacity, making it well suited for long cutting cycles such as this one.
Waterjet cutting is the ideal way to cut hard or thick materials that would be prone to fracture or warpage using traditional cutting methods. We pioneered the use of waterjet technology in the local region and have the expertise to accurately cut high cost materials with minimal scrap. The finished part is 21" in length, 8" in width, and cut to tolerances as tight as ±0.03". After the parts were cut they were checked in an inspection fixture provided by the customer. We machined hundreds of these caterpillars with an approximate 2 to 3 week lead time after receipt of material.
